ABOUT WSU

Current Profile of Wolaita Sodo University

Location

WSU is located in the mid highlands of southern Ethiopia. Specifically, it is found in Wolaita Zone, Sodo (6°49’N latitude and 37°45’E longitude) in the hub of Southern Regional State. The university is situated in the southern outskirt of Sodo town at the altitude of 1800 meters above the sea level. The area is enjoying a tropical climate, on average, 1,212 mm of annual rain fall and 20°c of mean monthly temperature.

City of Wolaita Sodo

Sodo lies approximately 330km south of Addis Ababa, along the main highway that leads to Arbaminch via Hossana. According to the latest official data, the population of Sodo is estimated to be about 100,000. Sodo is also one of the economically significant cities of the Regional State. The city is serving as a junction point of five major roads networking it with different parts of the country thus making it centre of business.

Brief History of WSU

Based on the underpinning public request as well as the government’s plan, it was decided to establish the university at its current location in 2007. After a while the firstly completed phase of the construction provided the bases for operation of Wolaita Sodo University College, as it was first named, that received its first batch, 801(609 male and192 female) students in four faculties and sixteen departments on March 27, 2007.

Since its establishment, the university has gone through a series of developments. It has witnessed tremendous expansion in terms of fields of study, infrastructure, facilities and campus population. In the academic years ranging from 2008 to2010 two more faculties and three schools, namely the faculty of Social Science and Humanities, the faculty of Natural and Computational Sciences, School of Engineering and Technology, School of Law, and the School of Veterinary Medicine were added. Currently, the university is operating with five faculties and three schools comprised of 24 departments.

Wolaita Sodo University works hard to produce competent, skilled and responsible graduates by providing quality and relevant education, and to undertake research and community services that generate knowledge and address economic, social, and cultural demands of the surrounding community, the country and beyond. The university also strives to achieve the missions bestowed up it by promoting cooperation among the units with in itself, establishing international partnership, and encouraging innovation and creativity on its endeavors.

As such, the university will continuously undertake all supportive and training actions to enable students and staff on all levels to interact easily in the university's working and teaching language English.

WSU will strive to fulfill its social responsibility. As such, the university will facilitate the participation of its staff and students in community development activities and public services.

  What Makes WSU Special?

 Tips with in its Environs : WSU is hosted in the:

  • City of a real 13 months sunshine and centre for business;
  • Area endowed with diversified natural resources and favorable climate for human as well as animal habitation
  • Untapped irrigable rivers that can be used for agriculture
  • Diverse types of crops growing that can be input for agro-industries
  • Areas ideal for tourist attraction and recreation
  • A guest house facility in the down town.
  • Regional Soil Laboratory and Diary Farm with in the town

 Tips with in the Campus :

  • WSU has got two campuses 7kms apart; the main campus (Gandaba) and its young branch Otona Campus (in the same town Wolaita Sodo)
  • The Otona Compus (where a huge construction is under way) hosts its own hospital with potential facility and rich experienced professionals.
  • Full on Campus a accommodation for all regular students
  • On Campus accommodation for 201 staff.
  • Broad band internet facility

Setting

Gandaba Main Compus is a huge green campus with notable spaces for Offices, libraries, laboratories, Seminar halls, class rooms and students’ dormitory. Huge projects including additional buildings for various services and in-road constructions are still underway, and it is hoped that the existing problems could be tackled soon.

 Student Exchange and Scholarship

WSU is also striving hard to facilitate international student exchange. Some applications are already forwarded to our University. The University is eager to entertain such requests promptly.

Our University has already offered a lot of domestic scholarship and overseas scholarship. Currently, 14 PhD Scholarships are busy in India, Italy and Addis Ababa University. Many others are in Addis Ababa, German, India, Czech Rep. and China for their MA/MSc degrees.

Campus Population

The university continues to experience tremendous increase in students’ enrollment and the diversity of fields of studies. In the current academic year, for instance, WSU enrolled 3735 (2970 male & 1328 female) students on the basis of Regular and Continuing Education Programs.
