Brief History & Perspectives

Center for students with disabilities in WSU was established in February, 2012. It was founded by Mr. Getachew Geno, a lecturer with visual impairment, in the department of English Language and Literature. This center is fully engaged in the task of helping transform the university environment into one in which deserving students with disability will have an equal opportunity to acquire an education and as much as possible participate in the various aspects of university life. This includes facilitating access to university buildings, providing services, awareness activities and advocating for accommodating university policies and procedures. The following support services are available;

  • Advocacy and /or advice on issues related to disability

  • Suitable accommodation for students with disability.

  • Braille services and printed material in alternative formats for the visually impaired

  • Consultative and counseling support for students with disabilities

  • Special services in the library for students with physical disabilities.

The Center for the students with disability will strive to become a model program serving students with disabilities in higher education. We are committed to developing a society in which individuals with disabilities thrive and participate fully. These individuals will be challenged to become responsible decision-makers, problem solvers and self-advocates in charge of their own destiny. We envision a campus community where all individuals are seen as valued and contributing members of society. Respect for all will encompass everything we do.

The mission of the Center for the students with Disability is to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to all university programs and activities. We provide students the opportunity to reach their full potential by:

  • coordinating academic accommodations and support services

  • promoting independence and self-advocacy

  • providing information and referral to appropriate resources

We help to foster a supportive and inclusive educational environment by:

  • Building and maintaining partnerships with colleges, schools, departments and staffs

  • Working together with government and none government organizations

  • Promoting disability awareness among all members of the university community

  • Providing guidance regarding university policies and procedures to ensure the full participation for persons with disabilities in all aspects of campus life

Core Values

  • Human variation is natural and vital in the development of dynamic communities

  • Building and using an academic success toolkit (i.e., self-advocacy skills, resources, various study strategies) is essential for all students

  • Responsibility for meaningful and universal access belongs to all

  • A diverse and stimulating university community is a shared responsibility; disability is diversity

  • Universal design is essential for achieving inclusion and social participation of all.

  • To ensure for students with disabilities, either in the university or community in the catchment areas of WSU, to have an equal educational opportunity and participate in the various aspects of life.
