About
I was born and grew up in an extended agrarian family with many family members in a multi-ethnic community in a rural village. I became one of a few students who got government scholarships to pursue a bachelor degree at a public university. After graduating with a bachelor degree in biology, I taught biology for three years in high school. Then, I studied for an MSc degree in Applied Genetics. After my MSc degree, I taught at the Wolaita Sodo University for three years as a lecturer and joined Addis Ababa University to study for a PhD degree in Applied Genetics. During my PhD study, I had unique experiences working with professors in the USA and Germany. Currently, I am an associate Professor of Applied Genetics at the Biology Department of Wolaita Sodo University in Ethiopia. I associate myself with several research activities besides administrative responsibilities and academic tasks, including teaching and advising students. My current interest focuses on morphological and molecular studies, nutrient analysis, ethnobotany, and the evolution and ecology of neglected and underutilized food and medicinal plants. I consider these wild realms complementary and examine them within an integrated framework in an effort to address the dynamics in relation to these issues. I have skills for DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, PCR amplification, and genetic data analysis. As a researcher in a developing nation, I am still confronted with difficult conditions, but I have the ability to overcome challenges, and I could use opportunities to enrich my career. I believe that I have a long way yet to go.
