Background

Welcome to College of Health Science and Medicine (CHSM).

It's a great privilege to deliver this message on behalf of the College of Health Sciences and Medicine, Wolaita Sodo University. College of Health Sciences and Medicine, often known as Otona Campus, is one of the four campuses of Wolaita sodo university. The campus is located in a health-friendly Dega (Highland) area of Otona, close to Damota Mountain,

The campus is set to provide medical services to the local community. Its establishment dates back to 1920 G.C., commencing as a small clinic by the Sudan Interior Mission. After its inauguration, it was upgraded to a primary hospital and served in that capacity for 50 years. Then, it was promoted to a general hospital as per the standards of the Ministry of Health and served for 30 years. Later on, it was amalgamated with Wolaita Sodo University to serve as a referral hospital in 2009. Since then, the college has been engaged in the teaching of medical and health sciences students, undertaking problem-solving research, and delivering clinical services for the community in the catchment area.

Since 2021, the hospital promoted itself as a comprehensive specialised hospital to become one of the few tertiary care-provider centres in the country and the only hospital in the region. The college undertakes academic activities with around 450 academic staff members with diverse academic qualifications, including professors. There are more than 1,250 total regular undergraduate students, including medical students, from neighbouring countries as well, who are passing the national university exit and license exam 100% every year.

The college is also home to many postgraduate students in clinical specialties in health sciences—PhDs in public health and medical specialties, training residents in general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, child health, and internal medicine. On the other hand, the hospital reaches over 15 million people, with more than 700 daily patient flows overseen by clinical specialists and subspecialists. It leads nearby 8 primary hospitals and 4 health centers in terms of supporting and equipping them to enhance their service delivery. As per the increasingly growing demand along with the regional and national disease burden, in the near future, the college aspires to become a center of excellence in nephrology, renal sciences, and clinical oncology.

As we jointly work with various national and global like-minded organisations and institutions, I would like to take this opportunity to extend an invitation to individuals and organisations who are interested in partnering with us to enhance the quality of health services we provide to our community and improve the national health system while adhering to the nation's health and educational policies. I want to make a special call to graduate and undergraduate students, whom we presume are our primary customers, to make the College of Health Sciences and Medicine your place of choice if you want to pursue quality education and advance your future career. Finally, our respected guests, our patients, the attendants, and visitors, I encourage you to come to your home and be in the hands of an experienced health professional.
