Background

Wolaita Sodo University has three campuses, one of which is the College of Health Sciences and Medicine Known by many as ‘Otona’ Campus. The College is located beneath Damota Mountain, which is known for its clean, healthy atmosphere.

The campus is set up to provide medical services to the local community. Its establishment dates back to 1920 G.C., commencing as a small clinic by the Sudan Interior Mission. After its establishment, it was upgraded several times; first, to a Primary Hospital and served in that capacity for 50 years. Then, it was promoted to a General Hospital as per the standards of the Ministry of Health and again served for 30 years. Later, it was amalgamated with Wolaita Sodo University to serve as a Referral Hospital in 2009. Since then, the college has been engaged in the teaching of medical and health sciences students, undertaking problem-solving research, and delivering clinical services for the community in the catchment area.

Approximately 450 staff members with a range of academic backgrounds, including professors, carry out academic activities while over 2600 clinical and administrative staff members provide clinical services at the college. There are more than 1,250 total regular undergraduate students pursuing graduate and undergraduate degree programs. This includes medical students from neighboring countries. Recently, 100% of our students passed the national university exit and license exam that is given every year. The college is also home to many postgraduate students in clinical specialties in health sciences-PhDs in public health and medical specialties-training residents in general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, child health, and internal medicine.

On the other hand, the hospital reaches over 15 million people, with more than 700 daily patient flows overseen by clinical specialists and subspecialists. It leads 8 primary hospitals and 4 health centers in terms of supporting and equipping them to enhance their service delivery. As per the increasingly growing demand along with the regional and national disease burden, the college aspires to become a center of excellence in Nephrology, Renal sciences, and Clinical Oncology.

We collaborate with a variety of national and international organizations and institutions that share our values to raise the standard of healthcare services we offer to our community and strengthen the country's healthcare system while upholding educational and governmental health policies.
