Dawro-Tarcha campus is one of the three campuses under Wolaita Sodo University, whose foundation stone was laid in January 2014 at Dawro Zone, Tarcha town; it commenced its teaching-learning endeavors in 2015 by enrolling ninety-three regular students in the public health, animal sciences, and plant sciences departments. Currently, the campus is operating its teaching-learning, research, and community engagement activities on more than 117 hectares of land in Tarcha town. It also has a research center in Kechi, one of the districts in the zone, with highland agroecology.

In addition to producing competitive graduates with a democratic mind-set through quality education and training, we have also conducted problem-solving research and offered need-based community services and consulting services for the past nine years. In the fiscal year 2023-2024, we have enrolled a total of 4889 students (i.e., 1,441 in regular and 3,448 in continuous education programs). Over 203 academic staff and 445 administrative staff are facilitating the teaching and learning process, and different industry professionals were also engaged as part-time teachers.

In the course of its developments, the campus is currently operating its academic deeds in 12 departments in a regular program encompassing the Agricultural Sciences (Plant Sciences, Animal Sciences, Horticulture, and Natural Resources Management); Social Sciences and Humanities (English Language and Literature, ‘Dawrotsuwa’ Language and Literature, Geography and Environmental Studies, and Civic and Ethical Studies); Business and Economics (Economics and Accounting and Finance); Health Sciences (Public Health); and Technology (Information Technology) disciplines. The campus is undertaking the construction of classrooms, student service centres such as cafeterias, clinics, dormitories, recreational centres, laboratories, and other facilities.

The campus is located in the epicentre of Dawro Zone, where interests from both domestic and foreigners are brought together due to prominent ecotourism and cultural hubs like ‘Kati Halala Kela’, Chebera Churchura National Park, hydropower projects, primarily Gilgel Gibe III and IV, mining investments, and other eye-catchy destinations to be studied, narrated, and utilized to the greatest advantages of local people as well as those in the distance. Apart from being the administrative centre of Dawro Zone, Tarcha town serves as a Southwest Ethiopian Regional State cluster centre for regional council and regional bureaus, particularly the social and cultural departments such as regional health, education, sport, culture, and tourism bureaus, and many more.

Therefore, the campus calls on all interested global, national, and local partners to collaborate and build mutual relationships, particularly in the areas of agriculture, health, culture and tourism, mining, and information technology.
