Message from Chief Executive Director

Welcome to College of Health Science and Medicine (CHSM).

It's a great privilege to deliver this message on behalf of the College of Health Sciences and Medicine, Wolaita Sodo University. College of Health Sciences and Medicine, often known as ‘Otona’ Campus, is one of the three campuses of Wolaita Sodo University. The campus is located in a health-friendly Dega (Highland) area of Otona, which is very close to Damota Mountain situated at the gate of the colorful city, Wolaita Sodo.

The campus is set to provide medical services to the local community. Its establishment dates back to 1928 G.C., when it was commenced as a small clinic by the Sudan Interior Mission. After its inauguration, it was upgraded to a primary hospital and served in that capacity for 50 years. Then, it was promoted to a general hospital as per the standards of the Ministry of Health and served for 30 years. Later on, it was amalgamated with Wolaita Sodo University to serve as a referral hospital in 2009. Since then, the college has been engaged in the teaching of medical and health sciences students, undertaking problem-solving research, and delivering clinical services for the community in the catchment area.

The college undertakes academic activities with around 450 staff members with diverse academic qualifications, including professors. There are more than 1,250 total regular undergraduate students pursuing graduate and undergraduate degree programs. This includes medical students from neighboring countries. Recently, 100% of our students passed the national university exit and license exam that is given every year. The college is also home to many postgraduate students in clinical specialties in health sciences-PhDs in public health and medical specialties, training residents in general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, child health, and internal medicine.

On the other hand, the hospital reaches over 15 million people, with more than 700 daily patient flows overseen by clinical specialists and subspecialists. It leads nearby 8 primary hospitals and 4 health centers in terms of supporting and equipping them to enhance their service delivery. As per the increasingly growing demand along with the regional and national disease burden, the college aspires to become a center of excellence in nephrology, renal sciences, and clinical oncology.

As we jointly work with various national and global like-minded organisations and institutions, I would like to take this opportunity to extend an invitation to individuals and organisations who are interested in partnering with us to enhance the quality of health services we provide to our community and improve the national health system while adhering to the nation's health and educational policies.
